FAQs

“Where words leave off, music begins.”

What music styles do you teach?

I specialize in classical and musical theater voice techniques, and have also worked with jazz, rock, and metal singers.

I teach classical piano techniques, and use the Alfred Piano series.

How do I pay for lessons?

All voice lessons ($90/hr, $50/30 half hr) and piano lessons ($80/hr, $45/half hr) can be paid for by Venmo, cash, check, or PayPal.

Do I need experience before I start lessons?  (Voice/Piano)

Absolutely not! I have years of experience working with brand new and high level students. Lessons will be customized to each student’s needs, interests, and skill level.

How often do I need to practice? (Voice/Piano)

I generally recommend at least 20-30 minutes a day, and 3-4 times per week, ideally. This time should include proper warmups and exercises, as well as time spent on repertoire. Not every practice session needs to include all the material being learned. Varying one’s practice is an excellent way to improve one’s musical neuroplasticity.

I don’t know my vocal range. Can you help? (Voice)

Yes! Knowing your voice part is only a small part of understanding the vocal instrument. Initial lessons will be spent exploring your vocal range, tone quality, and resonant abilities.

My child loves to sing, how early can they start voice lessons?

For the protection and appropriate development of the adolescent voice, I do not accept classical voice students under the age of 12. If your child is keen on learning music and good singing techniques at a younger age, we can gently explore singing pop songs and musical theater, building their ear, rhythmic understanding, and musicality until their voice has developed safely enough to begin more involved classical voice lessons. They can also start in my piano studio where they will also learn basic singing and note reading techniques.

I sing around my friends all the time and they like my voice. Why should I sign up for lessons?  (Voice)

While many voices can sound pleasant, without proper training and breathing techniques, singers can damage their voices and cause issues that may limit vocal use in later years. Vocal training will only improve your skills!

Do I need my own piano? (Piano)

You need to have a piano you can practice on at least three times per week, to ensure skills are progressing and information is retained between lessons. Don’t own a piano? Ask around at your local churches, schools, and community centers to use theirs. Pianos also go on sale for FREE on Facebook marketplace all the time.

Do I need to buy textbooks? (Voice/Piano)

Yes. This will be decided by the teacher based on skill level and interest.
